About Yves Saint Laurent Beauté (YSL)
Saint Laurent (also known as YSL) is one of the worlds most influential luxury fashion houses. It was founded in 1961 in Paris by the legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé. Today, the brands ready-to-wear and leather goods divisions operate under Kering Group, while its beauty and fragrance lines are managed by LOréal.
The brands timeless logo — the interlocking YSL — was designed by French graphic artist Cassandre. In 2012, the house underwent a major visual rebranding, officially shortening its name from *Yves Saint Laurent* to *Saint Laurent* for its ready-to-wear collections, while the YSL logo remains on accessories and beauty products.
Saint Laurent changed the course of fashion history. In 1966, the house launched *Saint Laurent Rive Gauche*, the first-ever ready-to-wear line by a haute couture house. This groundbreaking move made high-end fashion more accessible and democratized style.
That same year, Yves Saint Laurent introduced **Le Smoking** — a tuxedo suit for women. At a time when pants on women were considered controversial, Le Smoking became an enduring symbol of androgyny, empowerment, and modern femininity.
Other iconic creations include the **Mondrian Dress** (1965), inspired by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian’s geometric compositions, and the **Safari Jacket**, which blurred the line between military wear and everyday elegance.
Saint Laurent has also left a profound mark in the world of fragrance. In 1964, it released its first perfume, simply named Y. In 1977, the brand launched **Opium** — a bold, oriental-inspired fragrance that became legendary for its name and sensual composition, inspired by a Chinese snuff bottle. Opium remains one of the most famous perfumes in history.
In 1999, the Gucci Group (now Kering) acquired Saint Laurent. Yves Saint Laurent presented his final haute couture show in 2002 at the Centre Pompidou and retired shortly after. He passed away in 2008.
Since 2016, Belgian-born designer **Anthony Vaccarello** has served as the creative director. Under his leadership, Saint Laurent has embraced a sleek, sharp, and rock-chic aesthetic — paying homage to the houses legacy while pushing it into the future.
Saint Laurent operates more than 300 boutiques worldwide and continues to be one of the defining luxury brands of the 21st century. Its influence extends beyond clothing and accessories into music, art, and popular culture.
